Coroner Cristian D'Ovidio was in Pescara on Monday to conduct an autopsy on Piermario Morosini, the Italian player who died on Saturday after collapsing during a second-tier match.

The 25-year-old Livorno player's death during his side's game at Pescara provoked shock throughout the sporting world and caused the Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) to postpone last weekend's fixtures, including matches in the top flight Serie A.

The local authorities have launched an internal probe after the ambulance's arrival at the scene was delayed because access to the field was blocked by a parked city police car.

Doctors have said the delay is unlikely to have made a difference as the 25-year-old Morosini, a former Italy under 21 midfielder, was already receiving medical attention.

His death follows a number of similar fatalities in soccer and comes the month after a former Italy volleyball player and Olympic silver medallist Vigor Bovolenta died after collapsing on court during a fourth-tier match.
