(ANSA) - Caltanissetta, January 31 - Jailed Mafia kingpin Toto' 'the Beast' Riina is unfit to attend his murder appeal due to the debilitating effects of Parkinson's disease, his attorney said Tuesday. Defense lawyer Luca Cianferoni requested a full psychiatric review of his client, who he says is unconscious of the world around him. Riina, already convicted on separate charges, is accused of killing the politician Giovanni Mungiovino in 1983.

The Cosa Nostra boss was captured in 1993 after a bloody campaign against the Italian state including the murders of anti-Mafia magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

The results of his medical analysis will be presented to the Sicilian court on February 9.
