Italy hooker Fabio Ongaro said Friday that he will retire from international rugby after playing in Saturday's wooden-spoon decider against Scotland at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

The 34-year-old Venetian will collect his 81st cap after being called into the Azzurri starting lineup to replace Leonardo Ghiraldini, who has a foot injury.

"It wasn't an easy decision, but I'm convinced I'm doing the right thing at the right time," the Aironi forward said.

"I've played 10 Six Nations, three World Cups. I've certainly played more games than I would have expected on the day of my Italy debut. "I'm happy about every moment I've had wearing this jersey".

Italy, who are disputing their first Six Nations under new coach Jacques Brunel, and Scotland both go into their final game without a win, so the result is sure to decide who will finish last.

"We and our opponents are in a similar situation," Italy captain Sergio Parisse told a press conference.

"We've (both) had good games and come close to (achieving) important results but we find ourselves at the end of the Six Nations playing not to come last.

"The match is even more important for us as we are playing in front of our fans and we feel under pressure to give them something to cheer about".
