Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday spoke out against dissident priests in Austria who have called for married clergy, women priests and other reforms.
"We must rediscover true obedience," said the pontiff, referring to the Vienna clergy's manifesto 'Call to Disobedience'.
The pope said the situation in the Church was "dramatic".
The revolt is openly supported by over 300 priests and polls suggest it has broad public support in the traditionally Catholic country. "Rome's refusal to take up long-needed reforms and our bishops' inactivity not only allow but force us to obey our consciences and make ourselves independent," reads the appeal.
