Origine, diffusione e caratteristiche economiche
E' una delle due razze (l'altra è la Pilgrim) di origine americana; ma gli esemplari che diedero origine a questa razza giunsero dalla Pomerania nel 1900. In questa regione della Germania orientale, svernano quattro specie di oche selvatiche, che hanno in comune le zampe rosa (Greylang orientale, "Pink-footed") o becco rosso rosaceo (Greylang, "lesser White-fronted" e "White-fronted"). La Embden, pare ebbe origine da alcune di queste razze selvatiche che le trasmisero becco e zampe rosso rosaceo; anche l'American Buff ha ereditato da quelle oche selvatiche quella tonalità nel becco e nei tarsi; ma questi aspetti sono mutati e lo standard americano attualmente stabilisce becco e zampe arancioni, che solo con un accurata selezione si possono ottenere. Le oche menzionate qui sopra posseggono un piumaggio marrone-beige trasmesso anche all'oca Buff Back, che sicuramente ha avuto un ruolo saliente nella creazione dell'American Buff; quando questa razza dell'Europa orientale, giunse in America nel 1970. Infatti l'American Buff è una razza molto recente! Tanto è vero che quest'ultima ha le medesime dimensioni della Buff Back e la sua struttura morfologica è al quanto simile alla cugina europea.
Le American Buff hanno riscosso un immediato successo in America e per le loro dimensioni (di taglia medio/grande), che per questo suo meraviglioso piumaggio beige. Inoltre si tratta di un oca molto resistente, rustica e di carattere abbastanza docile. Di contro però non è semplice mantenere la colorazione beige perché vi sono diversi esemplari con geni recessivi che, oltre a ripresentare il becco e i tarsi rosso rosacei, presentano anche il dorso marrone che le rende molto simile alla English Saddleback o alla Grey Back. Se una femmina presenta un piumaggio grigiastro bisogna accoppiarla con un maschio dal colore più tenue per ottenere nuovamente esemplari beige. E il dilemma per la conservazione di questa tonalità non finisce qui! Il piumaggio beige è molto delicato e tende a degradarsi con il sole e anche prima di ogni muta, pertanto, se si desidera esemplari da mostra, bisognerebbe adottare alcune strategie; qualche tempo prima di esibire i propri animali, bisogna tenerli il più possibile all'ombra e somministrare loro abbondante alimento verde. Nel 2003 c'erano meno di 500 animali di allevamento e da cinque gruppi di riproduzione. Quindi negli Stati Uniti l'American Buff è classificata come razza rara!

E' un oca dal corpo compatto e robusto con un collo di media lunghezza e robusto, senza bavetta, ma viene ammesso un certo ingrossamento sotto al becco. Il ventre possiede due sacchi ben sviluppati e simmetrici. La disposizione delle distinte colorazioni del piumaggio sono identiche a quelle della Tolosa Buff, tranne che nelle zone macchiate che, in quest'ultima sono grigie, mentre nell'American Buff sono di marrone e beige chiaro e con un orlato molto più chiaro nelle piume. Becco e tarsi sono arancioni rossastri e occhi marroni.
